Standard form: big, small and prefixed numbers

Question: Express in standard form: (a) 123000123\,000, (b) 0.0280.028, (c) 50.6250.62 terametres, in metres. [Tera =1012= 10^{12}]

Step 1. Standard form is A×10nA \times 10^n with 1A<101 \le A < 10. For a big number, count how many places the point moves left:

123000=1.23×105123\,000 = 1.23 \times 10^5

Step 2. For a small number the point moves right, so the power is negative:

0.028=2.8×1020.028 = 2.8 \times 10^{-2}

Step 3. For the prefixed value, substitute the prefix first:

50.62 Tm=50.62×1012 m50.62 \text{ Tm} = 50.62 \times 10^{12} \text{ m}

This is not yet standard form — 50.6250.62 is too big.

Step 4. Shift one more place and compensate in the power:

50.62×1012=5.062×1013 m50.62 \times 10^{12} = 5.062 \times 10^{13} \text{ m}

Check. Each AA sits in [1,10)[1, 10): 1.231.23 ✓, 2.82.8 ✓, 5.0625.062 ✓.

⚠ Watch out: 50.62×101250.62 \times 10^{12} looks finished but fails the 1A<101 \le A < 10 test — prefix conversions almost always need that final one-place adjustment. Making AA ten times smaller makes the power one bigger, and vice versa.
