Differentiation (Increasing and Decreasing Functions)

1 / 3

Sign of dy/dx = Increasing or Decreasing

dydx>0increasingdydx<0decreasing\begin{gathered}\frac{dy}{dx} > 0 \to \text{increasing}\\[3pt] \frac{dy}{dx} < 0 \to \text{decreasing}\end{gathered}

"Find the range" → solve the quadratic inequality (sketch the parabola). "Show that" → argue the sign directly.

Reflex: Differentiate, then ask: where is this positive/negative?
